Overview

The school nurse is an integral part of the education team, responsible for promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of students. They provide direct care for students with acute and chronic health conditions, administer medication, and provide health education to students and staff. The school nurse also serves as a liaison between the school and families, coordinating with healthcare providers and community resources to ensure the best possible care for students. In addition, the school nurse may also provide emergency care in the event of a crisis or natural disaster. Overall, the school nurse plays a vital role in ensuring a healthy and safe learning environment for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Providing health assessments and screenings for students, including vision and hearing tests, BMI measurements, and immunization records review.
  • Developing and implementing individualized health plans for students with chronic conditions such as asthma or diabetes.
  • Monitoring and managing the health needs of students during the school day, including providing medication administration and first aid as needed.
  • Serving as a resource for students, parents, and teachers on topics related to health and wellness.
  • Collaborating with other school staff and community health providers to ensure that students have access to appropriate medical care and support services.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date health records for all students.
  • Participating in school-wide health and safety initiatives, such as emergency preparedness planning and injury prevention programs.
  • Advocating for the health and well-being of students and the school community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in nursing
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Valid state-specific nursing certification in school nursing
  • Experience in pediatric nursing and/or school health
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding school health
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, teachers, and other school staff
  • Knowledge of common childhood health issues and how to manage them
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and first aid
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive health information.
